Mill River Education Projects & Models

Idea and activity exchange created by teachers for teachers. Explore how students along the Mill River are investigating their watershed; building environmental literacy; and telling stories of the river past, present and future -- through science, poetry, mindfulness, artwork and civic action.

Millicent and the Day it Rained Buttons book cover
At the height of the 1874 Mill River Flood, a spotted brook trout named Millicent rescues a real-life, 18-year-old Button Mill worker named Caroline Bonney, giving her a voice and the chance to show the reader that each of our actions has a consequence. This book, by Nancy Meagher, is a fabulous resource for K-12 educators. As is this video created about the book.
The book can be purchased at Historic Northampton or online from Silver Street Media. It is also available through Gallery A3.
