The Mill River ends in Hulburt’s Pond, at a spot near its confluence with the Manahan, where it emptied in the 17th century. During springtime freshet, the Connecticut and Mill rivers flow into their floodplains, and then you can paddle along the broadening Mill River from Mass Audubon’s Arcadia Sanctury in Easthampton to South Street in Northampton.
Janine Norton, a denizen of the river’s end, has been paddling that section of the Mill River for some 10 years. She’s there whenever water levels allow passage through the forest of red and silver maples, elms, boxelders, and ash.
